Helping at Habitat
My name is Steven Cook and I am a long term volunteer in the country of Guatemala. Over the past few years I have been giving my heart and soul into various projects around the country. From house-parenting at a jungle orphanage, to trekking with a purpose to keep street kids in a safe home, and lastly working to transform the lives of students living around the Guatemala City garbage dump through education. My purpose here has been to lend a hand in the transformation and empowerment of Guatemalans across the country.
This year I plan to continue to with this mission by partnering with Habitat for Humanity, one of the world leaders in offering affordable and safe housing to those who are lacking. I’m looking forward to helping short-term volunteers and donors get connected to what Habitat is doing, and getting more people on board to the life-changing work that Habitat is doing.
It is estimated that over 1,700,000 people in Guatemala are living without adequate housing, and Habitat has been working here since 1979 to change that. In addition to the 50,000 houses that Habitat has built in Guatemala, we are also working to create sustainable change, not handouts, as well as training on preventative health and financial education.
When I first bought a one-way ticket to Guatemala City back in September of 2011 I had no idea where I would be or what I would be doing. I got offers from friends and family to support me financially, but graciously turned them down until I knew I was at a place where their money was going towards a great cause. It has been 25 months of surviving mostly with the help of a couple close family members, savings and credit card debt, and now I have arrived at a moment when I will need the help of others to continue to serve the less fortunate here in Guatemala
Looking forward to my 3rd year volunteering here in Guatemala (and beyond!), I’m realizing I won’t be able to do it without the support of my friends and family. If you are someone who is at a place to partner with me financially, thanks to you!
